Atmospheric Absorption
As sound waves travel through the air, the amplitude of the sound waves decrease as some of the energy is absorbed by the air. The physical process involved is complex, but there are mathematical models to describe the effect. The ANSI Standard ISO 9613 Part 1 describes a simplified way to calculate this effect, which is frequency dependent. The process is linear with distance, meaning if you double the distance, you double the absorption of sound.
